Mapping Buildings in Tanzania for Crowd2Map

This project shows every building in Tanzania outside Dar es Salaam mapped in OpenStreetMap from 2015-2018.  I sourced, processed, and visualized this data using a combination of open source software tools. The final visualization was used in founder Janet Chapman's FOSS4G 2018 Keynote Presentation.

Crowd2Map's mission is to put Tanzania on the map by mapping roads and buildings to help fight Female Genitalia Mutilation (FGM) in the areas where girls are most at risk. FGM “includes procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons” (WHO). According to the World Health Organization, over 200 million girls and women alive today have been cut in 30 countries mostly concentrated in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

This visualization will be used as a tool to communicate Crowd2Map's social and operational impact by providing volunteers and aid workers the opportunity to use building data as a proxy for building footprints. By measuring foot traffic organizational actors can better predict where to focus efforts and educational resources.
